Stairs on the interior or exterior of a building are evaluated for their condition and general safety. Stairs include several inspectable components:
- Stringer: A stair stringer (also called ‘string’ or ‘stringer board’) is the housing on either side of a flight of stairs into which the treads and risers are fixed. A staircase will have two stringers, one on either side of the steps. The two main types of stringer are referred to as cut and closed.
- Nosing: a projecting edge, as the part of the tread of a step extending beyond the riser.
- Tread: A stair tread is the horizontal portion of a set of stairs on which a person walks. The tread can be wood, metal, plastic, or other materials.
